The Hub is a purposed designed for professionals and businesses to interact with University academics and members of the Business Gateway team. Corporate membership provides access to high quality meeting and networking facilities as well as University expertise and a package of additional benefits.
The Institute of Directors (IoD) recently held one of its popular Business Breakfasts in partnership with the University¿s new Hub lounge. The theme could not have been more topical as IoD and Hub members came to hear expert views about the economy and strategies for recovery.
Graeme Leach, the IoD’s Chief Economist and Director of Policy, delivered an up-to-date analysis of the current economic situation, global trends, government response and the likely impact for IoD members and other businesses.
Dr. Gary Cook, Senior Lecturer in Applied Economics from University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS), gave his expert views on why the economy has nose-dived into recession and the usefulness of the past as a guide to its likely depth and duration. He then addressed the impacts of the policy response so far, and what more could be done by government.
Both speakers provided complementary insights and highlighted the complexity of the issues. They predicted that the economy is in for a sustained period of recession characterised by low interest rates, low inflation and negative economic growth. They commentated that this could just be the beginning and there is more that can be done by government to mitigate the worst possible effects, including greater fiscal stimulus and quantitative easing.
Darrell Matthews, IoD Regional Director Northwest commented: “This is a tough time for business, and it’s better to be well informed. This has been a productive joint event; well attended by IoD and Hub members alike due to the significance of the subject matter and quality of the speakers. The Hub is exactly the right sort of environment for such an important discussion; fostering a professional and open atmosphere.”
